Heather Shipley

I am Project Manager for the Religion and Diversity Project, (SSHRC funded initiative, University of Ottawa, led by Lori Beaman), and have taught in Religious Studies and Sexuality Studies at the University of Ottawa, Carleton University and Queen’s University.  I have a Bachelor of Arts (Religious Studies and Psychology), Master of Arts (Religious Studies), PhD (Religious Studies) and Masters in Law (Common Law Section) from the University of Ottawa.  My research focuses on the construction, management and regulation of religion, gender, sexuality and sexual orientation as identity categories in media, legal and public discourse. I am interested in challenging normative assumptions about religious, gendered and sexually diverse identities, exploring the navigation of intersectional identities and the challenges faced by rigid notions about identity in law and public policy.
